Volunteer Response Unit members
assist the Sheriff's Office in many ways. By utilizing the
volunteers, deputies can serve our communities better.
Year-round VRU projects keep volunteer work interesting and
rewarding. Below are a few of the tasks performed by the
Volunteer Response Unit.

Radar Trailer Placement and
Monitoring
Volunteer
members rotate the location of the Yamhill County Sheriff's
Office vehicle radar trailer. Somewhere, in the county, you can
find the trailer setup and monitoring traffic speed conditions.
If you request to have the radar trailer placed near your home,
you are welcome to
contact us.
We will ask some questions, then conduct a site evaluation for
electricity hookup, setup safety, and priority. If the site is
approved for placement, your request will be added to the list
and filled as the trailer is available. BE ADVISED: DUE TO THE
HIGH NUMBER OF REQUESTS, PLACEMENT AT YOUR LOCATION COULD BE
QUITE DELAYED.
Community Events
Summer
events account for most of VRU's community function
participation. We can assist in many different events offering
traffic control for parades, foot patrols, staffing the VRU
Trailer booth, and simply just offering our presence. See our
Events page for a list of annual events we
participate in.
Newberg Roger's Landing Patrol
Beginning
this summer, VRU members will be patrolling the boat launch at
Roger's Landing park in Newberg. The main objective is to ensure
that boaters operating powerboats are submitting their launch
fee. Due to the rising costs in maintenance to the park, park
officials were forced to require the fee. Boaters are encouraged
to purchase an annual pass - especially if they use the launch
frequently.
Crime Scene Security
Volunteer
Response Unit members are trained in providing security to
property involved in vehicle accidents, homicides, drug busts,
structure fires and more. Volunteers typically staff the
Incident Command van that is taken to the scene and record
arrival and leave of scene officials, make perimeter checks, and
provide security to the property and those at the scene.
VRU Academy
Volunteer Response Unit members interested in participating in
most of the above projects are required to attend an academy
designed for our volunteers. Classes are typically during the
late winter/early spring. They are usually every Saturday
morning for approximately 2 months. Some of the subjects the
academy focuses on include: Crime Scene Security, Traffic
Control, O.C. Spray, Defensive Tactics, and Ethics. Ethics
training is provided by Sheriff Crabtree. We consider this
training of high importance, because were always striving to
offer
"Excellence in
Service".
